How to Fix Event ID 131, Metadata Staging Failed in Windows 11

1. Check for Corruption in the System Files

The very first thing you need to do whenever you see the Event ID 131 is to check for corruption in the important system files. To do this, open Command Prompt as an administrator, type the following command and hit Enter:

sfc /scannow

Once the sfc scan is complete, you’ll need to run the DISM scan. To run DISM scan, type the following command one by one and hit Enter after each command.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth 
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth 
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Once the DISM scan is complete, you’ll see “The operation completed successfully.” message.

2. Edit the Registry

As the error is related to metadata, the next solution you can try is to edit the DeviceMetadataServiceURL string in the registry. To do this, open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following location:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Device Metadata

Double-click DeviceMetadataServiceURL string in the right pane.

Replace the content of the Value data section with the following:

Click OK to save the changes.

After that, restart your computer and the error should have been gone.

3. Stop Windows From Automatically Updating Drivers

You can also configure your Windows from downloading available driver updates to fix the issue. To do this, open the Settings app, click System and then About in the right pane.

Switch to the Hardware tab and click Device Installation Settings.

Choose No and click Save Changes.

And that’s about it. You should now not see the Event ID 131, Metadata staging failed error.
